The city of Chiang Rai was founded in 1262 A.D.
by King Meng Rai and was the first capital of Lanna Thai (Kingdom of
a Million Ricefields). It contains manifold historic relating with
other cities like Chiang Saen which was once the centre of power of
the long-gone Lanna Kingdom. Nowadays, Chaing Rai is Thailand's
northernmost province with the border to Myanmar at Mae Sai where
tourists can enter the Burmese border town of Thachilek. It only
takes an hour drive from Chiang Rai city to Chiang Saen which is the
gateway to the "Golden Triangle", where Mekhong River separates
Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand.
