Information
Mae
Hong Son, surrounded by forested mountains, has flourished as a holiday
retreat for discerning travelers because of its remoteness and cool
climate. Two highways from Mae Sariang and Pai link the valley to Chiang
Mai on routes that take them through steep mountains with panoramic
views of neighboring Myanmar to the north and west.
The
journey through hairpin bands and steep climbs and descents are the
integral part of the Mae Hong Son experience. Nature, the highlanders’
culture and soft adventure are the hallmarks of a trip to this valley in
Thailand’s second northernmost province. The 924-km
journey from Bangkok can be completed on the daily airline services that
fly via Chiang Mai. Once in the valley, travelers are impressed by its
heritage and natural beauty.
Life
here reflects the cultural influence of neighboring Myanmar and the
ethnic minority groups that live in the surrounding mountain region.
You will be impressed by the handicrafts, the distinct character of the
food, the colorful temples, and above of all the welcoming hospitality
and friendliness of Mae Hong Son community. The town
has it own customs that is reflected in the profusion of temple
festivals and ceremonies as well as the unique culture of the ethnic
minority groups. The valley is also home of soft adventure – river
rafting, treks, mountain-bike, expeditions and even cave exploration.
